As a benefit of closer relationship with the central government, King arranged for a new market building to be constructed in Badulla in 1889, three years after the proclamation of the province. It is said that the cost for the construction of the building was 5000 rupees. The further advantages gained by the province were construction of a new hospital and a Kachcheri building in close proximity to the market in 1890, and 1891 respectively.
Then you will travel to the town where you can visit St. Mark's Church, before 1857 church services were conducted in the local court house by the priest from Nuwara Eliya. On 24 February 1846 Bishop James Chapman visited Badulla and held a service in the court house which was attended by district officials and coffee planters. The next day he organised a public meeting for neighbourhood Ceylonese and Europeans to make preliminary arrangements for the construction of a church. After initiating the work of church, he visited Badulla again in 1850 and 1853. It is said that people of all religions and races in Badulla contributed to the construction of the church.

Badulla, where the Devalaya is situated, was a sub-kingdom of the Kandyan kingdom. At the end of August 1630, the Badulla territory was invaded by the Portuguese Army, under the leadership of General Constantino de Sa. According to the reports they ransacked and looted the entire city and had destroyed thousands of rice stalks and all the cattle that they could find in the countryside. It is reported that the original buildings of devalaya were also destroyed by the Portuguese army. Soon after the devastation, the devalaya was restored and re-endowed by King Rajasinghe II.

On the 8th year after attaining the Enlightenment, the Buddha made his 3rd visit to Kelaniya on the invitation by a king of Naga people named Maniakkitha. During this visit, a local chieftain named Indaka invited Buddha to visit his place in Badulla. At the end of sermons made by Buddha there, Indaka had wanted something to worship in memory of Buddha's visit. The Buddha is said to have
given him a few of his hairs and a few drops of sweat that turned into pearls (mukthaka).
